Northeast Nebraska | Guys this isn't anything new. I use to detassel, then rouged and by 16 I was running a cutter machine. So many kids were hired around here all to get a $500-$1000 check. It was a struggle to find kids to do a good job. They started with a Hispanic crew and probably 10 years ago they went completely with Hispanic. They come in here and do a great job in the fields. They buy all the groceries here and have their own cook. I can't say I have heard of them ever getting in trouble around here either. The seed company pays a flat fee per acre and that goes to the head of the crew then he pays his workers. After that season most of them go to the husking house and work during harvest.
When I worked at the seed corn plant it was a labor issue. You hire 100s of kids then you need buses and pickups to get kids who quit after 2 rounds. Plus crew leaders and guys to drive the bus. So much more efficient to hire it out. Did I mention the Hispanics show up to work and get the job done! | |
