Subject: RE: Dordt College Agriculture Alumni?

NW Iowa
I graduated from Dordt 2 years ago and still work in the area. Without having any other school to compare it too I thought the ag program was very worth it. When I was in school some of the classes really focus on the conservation side of things focussing on cover crops and other ways to be environmentally conscious with farming practices. At the time I thought it was a joke having to sit through some of that but now I'm starting to work with some of these practices and it all makes a little more sense. They also do a great job of trying to get some hands on learning done on their farm which they seem to be adding on to each year.

Some of the professors seem like guys who were to smart to farm and ran themselves out of business if that makes sense, but there were a couple of them who I picked up a lot from and actually looked forward to going to their classes during the week. Dr. Hummel was one of these. He would be the main agronomy professor if I remember correctly.

The tuition is high but I personally was able to handle that by working through school. There are a ton of local business that are in the ag industry who are more then willing to hire students for part time jobs and earn a little money on the side if thats something she would be interested in. Dordt is also fantastic at lining up internships for their students. They feel it is a major part of a students education. I never did get involved in their ag club or much of the animal side of things so i can't say for certain what that is all about, but I know they offer a lot of those groups to become more involved.

As far as the community of the college I enjoyed it. There is a little truth to the religion part of it but there are a lot of kids on the campus who aren't Christian Reformed. I wasn't Christian Reformed while there and I never really felt out of place or anything like that. Apologize about the length but just thought I'd throw my experience in. Never thought I'd see the day Dordt showed up on Agtalk. I might be able to help with other questions too if you have them.
