| I remember seeing a couple that were pretty much overhead in South St. Louis County in Missouri late 1950s.. Would have been visible many miles further south.
I saw some about 1967 in the west side of Ames Iowa and one of them was white and visible in the afternoon. Looked a lot like a cloud but it was aurora.
There are a couple sites on line that forecast how far south and when aurora can be seen. I have used aurora to reflect VHF signals for very long distance contacts numerous times. Didn't have to see them by eye, just by radio. I find the forecast sources by googling aurora.
They can be predicted by solar ejections and by the earth's position when the ejected energy gets to the earth's atmosphere. Typically they show in Scandinavia 6 or 8 hours before they show in the midwest.
