It is a fundamental founding principle of the United States, that each of us has the right to act for our own self-interest. That doesn't mean that we should only always act exclusively for our own self-interest but that each of us gets to decide what that is.
Any time some one tells me that I'm being selfish because I'm not automatically giving way to economic interests of the one percent, I get skeptical.
