Being a computer technician, I normally install either AVG or Avast for anti-virus software for people. Both are free and both do a far better job that the paid Norton or McAfee. Lately I've been using Avast more than AVG because that lastest version of AVG is starting to be like Norton (bogged down with too much resources).

As far as a firewall, stick to the Windows XP firewall, PLUS, your router acts as a basic firewall anyhow. Because on the router, as long as you don't open any incoming ports to your local computers, you pretty much stop most things from entering. The exception is that if you have a program on your computer that is requesting crap from the internet.
