NE Iowa | I don't know how many cows you currently have on pasture but doubling the stocking rate with daily supplemental feeding would be much less investment than a cow-calf confinement building. A simple concrete pad in the pasture to feed on is a good idea but much less than a building. And then in the winter they could be moved to a cornstalk field and fed there. So 6 months of the year in the pasture with some feed brought to them and the other 6 months run cornstalks fields possibly with rye seeded after harvest. Ideal situation would be a concrete feed pad that is accessible to both pasture and cornfield so used all year for feeding. Being in Iowa I assume what limited pasture there is adjoins crop fields.
