Iowa | I was in all this growing up and it WAS being a kid. Plus I had a job. Plus I worked on the farm. I did livestock chores every day before I went to school. I had a lot of fun in those activities and I learned a lot about expectations and responsibilities as well. My engagement in the community didn't stop when I went to college and it didn't stop when I became an adult member of my community.
I think you'll find that busy kids are in less trouble and turn out to be far more productive citizens than those who don't involve themselves in other things. I can stand up in front of people I know and don't know and talk for an hour on topics. I sure couldn't do that without some of the activities I was in. I learned how to work. I learned how to manage time. And I had a blast doing it. I go to the county fair today and I am done in a couple hours. I got to thinking about how much fun it was when I was in high school. Why? Because I had so much to do. Animals to take care of. Projects to display. Presentations to give. Booths to work.
ETA: being in all this stuff was MY choice. My parents had the stipulation--you join it, you stay in it. Otherwise, it was all me.
