Subject: RE: Planting cover crop blend now?

SE SD
I am north of Avon Sd 14 miles. more than likely its cereal rye. Some people call annual rye grass rye too. I get all my seed from Brad Young (prairie state seeds) http://www.prairiestatesseed.com/ in Bloomfield Ne. He is a grazer him self and has been grazing/seeding this stuff for years on his own farm. I like to have my cover crops in by middle of august, need about 60 days growth before frost for grazing. After silage we look at shifting to more cool season small grains that will possibly give some fall grazing, but more for spring grazing. I like the hybrid brassicas, for the little extra in cost I feel you gain that back in tonnage for grazing. I use local conservation district drill and mix all the seed together and seed in the back box, usually gives me pretty good stand.

edit
my mix last year was seeded july 6th but didn't germinate till 6th of august mix was
hairy vetch 2.3lb/ac
collards 1
hybrid brassicas 1.8
sorghum/sudan 1.5
pearl millet 2.5
oats 7
forage peas 7
radish .4
forage soybeans 3.5
winter rye 6
sunhemp 1
sun flower .4
