Subject: WAAS vs RTK vs. markers for Planting

Sunnyvale, CA
many growers have used WAAS for planting corn, however, WAAS works best when
1. Starter Fertilizer is applied while planting and you are not planting on previously applied fertilizer strips.
2. You use the same number of rows for Planter, side dressing implement and harvester. You use the same number of rows to avoid an implement or header spanning a guess row. (You could work this if you have a 6 row combine and plant 12 or 18 rows, for example.) I don't know anyone who uses row markers and run their harvester across a guess row.
3. You are using auto-steering and expect to use a bit of nudging on all subsequent field operations after planting. When using WAAS nudging is needed to accommodate the small, but inevitable drift in position from WAAS during subsequent operations.
4. spraying you can follow the rows. You do not need foam. With WAAS you can use the adaptive curve pattern if you turn off the auto-turn detect for next row and install an end of row switch, and you can easily find the next row without foam when spraying.
5. You are growing broadacre crops and don't have to worry about rows.

RTK or Omnistar HP/XP works best, for example, when you are
1. Using strip-till and want to plant over your fertilizer strips.
2. Planting and harvesting a with different number of rows that spans a guess row. For instance planting with a 6 or 12 row planter and harvesting with an 8 row combine. (RTK works best for this.)
3. You are using controlled traffic for all of your vehicles on your fields.

Since accuracy is addictive, and it is good to start with GPS equipment that can be easily upgraded when you are ready for the next step in accuracy. Having to replace your entire GPS Lightbar is a more expensive way to solve your guidance needs. The EZ-Steer 500 product works well with either WAAS or RTK.
