It appears some farmers can be put into this category. Baby carrots are not turned down. They are cut up from larger carrots. The industry started by finding a home for broken and misshapen carrots. Orginaly they were cut up with knives now many are pealed and cut with a water jet cutter. Now most of the carrots grown specifically for the baby carrot market are grown in high density plantings to make them grow long and thin.

Here is a picture of one my neighbors carrot fields last January being harvested we are about 1 mile to the left of the picture.
