Subject: Burn barrels legal here.

My local township allows burn barrels, and issues annual "fire permits" for them: ( $10 ), for a few regualations: fire must remain attended, cover to prevent flying embers, etc. Township council reasons that it's better to turn a blind eye towards private garbage pollution, rather then raise taxes to have it all picked up and trucked away to a landfill in the next county. We haven't taken common household garbage off the property in years and years. We do seperate glass and metal for recycling. (although there is an area on the farm to dump that too, there is no point in letting it accumalate here.)

I use a typical 45 gallon drum, with a hole in the side near the bottom, facing the wind for better draft. Use it for typical household garbage, plastics, leaky rubber boots (burns very black), cardboard. The glossy paper of magazines can be problematic. Found the solution is to dip them in a pail of used motor oil, then toss into the barrel (carefully). Two disposal problems solved in one swoop. Used oil is too dangerous to pitch or pour it directly onto fire. Amuse yourself by tossing in the 2-litre plastic pop bottles with the cap screwed tightly [[pow!]] Also, remeber to lecture family members on why they should never put an aerosol can in the house garbage. [[bang!!!]]

Silage plastic and plastic twine is saved by stuffing it into the plastic bags that livestock salt comes in. Wait until winter with a fair amount of snow on the groundand no wind, and create a plastic bonfire, with armloads of sisal twine, in the middle of the field (no metal residue to worry about). For added effect, pour used motor oil in the bags of twine before tossing on.
