Very much depends on what you are interested in. If you want a series of novels where you can recognise the lead characters instantly and watch them develop then something by David Baldacci might be good, or maybe Tom Clancy but his has a distinct military flavour which might not suit all tastes.

Robert Ludlum did a lot of thrillers and is responsible for the basis of the Borne movies. I have also read a lot of sci-fi by Peter Hamilton but again it is not for everyone.

If you want some world history then there are tonnes of historical ficition, sometimes heavily based in reality, which will lead you through say, Napoleons life, or through the reign of Ancient Greece, or the Roman empire and so on.
