Around here, they say there is a 10 to 1 ratio buyer ratio for calves that are at least 45 days weaned and double vaccinated. Most go that way, myself included.

That said, I have had years where it didn't pay to do it. A falling price and/or death loss can bite you. Most of that premium you get for hardening those calves up is just what the market is willing to pay for the risk mitigation on the health side of things (not so much the work and costs of doing it).
