I didn't read all the replies yet, but from the ones I did read, no one said this yet...

SET EXPECTATIONS. By doing this, it give you two things - something to gauge whether or not the partnership is working from BOTH standpoints. Also, it opens up communications. If you sit down with any business partner and as soon as you try having a discussion, if it turns hostile or defensive, you need to work on communication first, second, and lastly.

Think of it from his point of view - he's turning his life's work over to an inexpirenced person that wants to do things differently from what's worked before...what would you do in his shoes?
