That was South Dakota 20-50 years ago. When you have to drive an hour or more to get anything then it's bad. One of the things I blame it on is that we never had a manufacturing base. My brother lives in a small town in northern IA with no school and a population of less than 250. I think he said at last count there was almost 100 kids under 18 in the town. The difference being that there are a lot of jobs nearby IMO. It's certainly not like the town has a lot of attractions. Last time I was there the coop was the only business in town.
