South Ga
Been heading that way here for a long time.
Things change and not always for the better. At one time there where many more small farms here with an independent operator instead of fewer very large farms without many employees because of larger equipment. At one time a 500-600 acre farm was a large outfit with 3-4 or more families living from it. A timber crew that took the sawmill with them could have 30-40 employees. Now what took 30-40 is done by 4-5 at the most. It wasn't considered practical for people to drive 10 miles or more to "town" everyday. It took grocery stores, hardware stores, banks and schools to support all these people in the community. I think school consolidation was one of the final nails in the coffin. One of the other nails here is CRP. It's all in pine trees. At least when someone farmed it there was money changing hands on it every year, spreading the wealth if you will. Now the landowner gets a payment from the Feds for a few years and a timber crew comes in every 15 years to thin/cut timber. When it was farmed fuel, seed, fertilizer, parts and equipment was bought. Crops were taken to the peanut buying point, the gin, or the elevator. When trees go in all that economic activity stops.
It's a much bigger than just those things but it's a large part
