NC Kansas | The new Durango is on the same platform as the jeep Grand Cherokee and some Mercedes model I can't remember. I think they are all wheel drive all the time...just had to go look at ours. It has 2 transfer case settings, auto AWD and low range. What I was saying is it's still a vertically positioned motor. Generally when you see something advertised as AWD, it's a front wheel drive vehicle in its design. When you see 4x4 it's designed like a traditional rear wheel drive vehicle. It can be confusing as I figured the Durango redesign involved switching to a front wheel drive design
Edit: don't let the fact that it shares a platform with the grand Cherokee throw you off on size. The Cherokee looks smaller and is a little shorter wheelbase but the components and basic mechanics are supposedly the same. and to answer you question, yes it's rear wheel drive in its design like a 1/2 ton pickup. But you can't run in 2wd only mode
