West Chazy, New York | A lot of the final cost will be in the discretionary expenses. It makes a huge difference if you have a contractor who includes everything in his price or has you pick things as you go. Be aware; if he includes everything in one price it will almost certainly be low to middle end materials unless you request something specific. For an example, go to a building supply and price out preformed chipboard/formica countertops and granite or marble countertops of the same size. Then factor in that the stone tops will require extra support and take more labor to install. It adds up, and the same type of situation will apply to flooring, cabinets, lighting, ceiling fans, baseboards... well, you get the idea. The cost can and will escalate, but how much it does that will depend on how determined you are to stick to a budget. I don't want this to come across the wrong way, but the biggest expense in building a house can be the divorce if you both are not in agreement on what you want to end up with. It can be a lot of fun if you keep your head about it or it can be a disaster if you don't. I hope yours is the right kind of experience. | |
