Subject: Re: Variable Rate Nitrogen (sidedress) discussion

Fifteen year plus vr producer here. We are currently vr applying a base rate of nitrogen for 140 bu field average. 11-52 is rated for 200 bu ave yield goal. Rationale for this is that we are in an area where we aren't worried about losing phosphorus from one year to the next. Based on stand, plant date, moisture situation, etc., we will side dress in season with a flat rate which will raise all yield zones. If we have 18" corn on Memorial Day we are going to be obviously more aggressive than if we have 18" corn on the Fourth of July. We do have the capabilities to vr with our side dress rig and have done that on a custom basis in heavily manured fields where no commercial fertilizer was used prior to planting.
