I'm not a big fan of rolling by any means but I understand the reasons why guys do it and I've come to respect it. I have a feeling rollers will eventually be like bean rider bars.

The timing thing is solely up to you. If you want to roll just to push the stones and rootballs into the ground then you have some options.

One thing I've witnessed every year that the rolling thing has occured in our area is the one day of 30+ mph SW winds that manage to blow anything loose into the road ditch. It's annoying and not a good practice in my opinion.

I've heard a few guys ask at meetings up here this winter if they can roll ahead of the planter. I actually think that makes more sense and the planter unit would ride somewhat smoother. The planter unit would also "rough" up the ground which might help keep the corn residue from blowing into the road ditches and fencelines.

Rolling beans after they are up has been done. I think it would be playing Roulette though.
