Central Illinois | SC. Perhaps you could, better than I, relate some things about this facinating book. I read it years ago, and have forgotten most of it. To you young guys, it traced the origins of the grain tradeing business world wide. Published in the 70's I believe, the McMillan family (Cargill) was the new guy on the block, only a little about 150 years in the business.
One interesting tidbit was that in the early thirties, they went to world governments with concerns about Hitler. Why? Because Germany was buying massive stockpiles of grain, and the only reason they would do that was in preparation for war. So yes, the grain industry then was very private, but collectively they could tell a lot. | |
