Warburg, AB | Pat H, I agree with your post - don't believe it makes sense to save every last one of them, and I definitely agree that it has to be done right. If bouncing is quick and effective, I can support that - it's the people that don't make it quick and effective that irk me.
Biggest struggle for me is some of the anthropomorphising - I'm not a googly-eyed, love-them-to-death type - I just figure the animal deserves some respect, and sounds like you guys responding treat your animals the same way. There are necessary evils for our production systems, and I am more than okay with that.
And KinzeMech, thinking some more, I agree with what you're saying about the slaughterhouses - too much BS and too many people trying to sneak a questionable any through, when probably you and I would have put it out of it's misery a long time ago.
Curious, is there any meat on them 100 lb'ers? Wife was asking, expensive to take to the abbatoir, but wondering if there's anything there if they clean up old feed, run them on some grass, etc. Makes me sound like a hippy, but I'm more after having 1 or 2 around for sausage alone. If the meat is there I'd consider having a "pet" for the summer and then into the deep freeze you go :D And no livestock is a pet, flat out. Living, breathing, working animals is what they are. Just to clarify.
