cropsey, il 61731 | You guys realize we raise pigs to kill them and eat them. Just the way it is. At one time everyone seemed to understand the difference between animals and humans, but modern pet owners now try to get their cats enrolled in college. I see it as reverse maturity - maturity recognizes that there are things are just part of life and until the lion can lay down with the lamb (bet lamb won't get much sleep) it's the way it is.
Immaturity lift selfish, shifting 'feelings' up as what should guide our principles and that's what we have today. Used to be you told your daughters that acting out on their feelings makes them mothers and they were not ready for that. Now folks put them on birth control. We used to have to grow up and face the facts of life. One of those facts is that feelings get put aside for what has to be done. It's ok btw.
It's not that any one having to perform euthanasia is all happy about it, but it's not about how I feel about it. I'm a steward and need to do what's right for the animal. I've grown pigs (wean to finish) for 10 years and still try to 'save them' a little too much, but I don't try nearly as hard any more. Now it's treat the sick animal and if it responds, great, if not rendering service gets it.
Anyone associated with lots of sows can at least understand the thinking behind g stalls. The reason they are going away is purely based on feelings.
Btw, putting small pigs down still has to be done right - folks involved need to be trained.
