I always dreaded that chore.

Logically, you know it's the humane thing to do. The animal is not viable, it can die slowly, or instantly, but it's still hard to do. Mom wouldn't do it. If she had "knockouts" she put them in a bucket for Dad. I only had to do it if he was unavailable (rare). The simple fact is, not everyone has the stomach for every chore to be performed on the farm. It's a little harsh to make it a condition of employment, if that's what you're saying is happening here. I would think on a farm that size, that chore could be left to an employee not bothered by it.

I no longer work on the farm, but that is a chore I definitely do not miss.
