If you can, dig a trench to put the pile in. I know this can't be done in wet areas or if things are in the way. But if you can, piling in a trench allows a few things to work for you. First, fumes stay down. Second, you are on top of the pile so pushing it down is not an issue. Next, the heat draws up the middle of the pile. Just keep adding to it as it burns down. When done, just push the dirt over into it and go home.
