I'm not sure what you mean by "Personal Protection".
Do you mean for home, or a CC weapon.

Totally agree, depends on if this will be concealed on body/auto or put in your home. There are lots of good 9mm handguns for concealed carry in the $500 range. Ruger LC9, S&W Shield, Springfield XD, Kimber Solo or Kahr. I would go 9mm for affordablility of ammo and less bulk.
