Wallis, TX | We used that setup in Ghana for irrigation. Used a screen 'box' on the end on most rather than a pipe screen. Some were more problematic that others, just depended on how much trash that part of the river carried. And,,,, we had local cheap labor to keep them clean.
If I were installing one that I had to operate I'd put a small pond/tank on top and plumb it back into the 'well' so I could open a valve and backflush the screen. I know of one setup like this. the only difference he is pumping into a canal and uses the canal to backflush with a big 24" gate valve, it will blow the silt and trash off the screen no matter what, but he is about 25' above normal river level and has a mile long canal full of water to flush with. | |
