I have wondered about this also. I like to leave taller grass in the fall, but everyone else wants it mowed like a lawn. My thinking is in a forest the trees break up the rain drop so when it finally reaches the ground it's so small it just soaks in. Compared to a full size drop that splats the bare ground. JMO.
