NE Iowa | To air dry corn you need at least 1 cfm / bu and 1.25 is better. You are probably at only around 0.5 cfm /bu assuming a 42' bin. That airflow combined with low temps means that even running the fans won't dry the corn. In 2009 the corn was so wet and harvest late I couldn't get the corn air dried before it got too cold. So kept the corn as cold as possible by occasionally running fans on 0 deg mornings. I was able to keep 18%+ moisture corn until April and then warmed the corn up and resumed air drying. If you look at different publications 18% moisture corn will keep 6 months if kept at 40 deg. Another publication says that 22% moisture corn will only keep 2 months at 30 deg. In your situation I would only try it if bins had temp sensor cables hanging in them to check for hot spots. | |
