Downtown Shell Knob MO Come Visit!
been a many a guy around here make a 6 figure salary for many years stealing one or two cattle at a time. Of course you never here about them because they never get caught, they steel cows and keep the cows and sell the calves. Its the guys my age that steel 50 or 100 calves and sell them at a sale two days later 100 miles away that always seem to make the news. And of course there are always the entire cow heards that get stolen from the poor broke guy that just bought full insurance on his cattle 8 months ago. But most of the good true blue cattle theft that happens around here happens 1-10 at a time.
Our farm has probably had 10-15 cattle stolen in my lifetime. But eveyone always blames a good cows that ends up missing or dead on theft so you just have to let it go and try to investigate on your own.
Its usually pretty easy to tell when the two best cows come running to the feed truck in the winter and then they aren't there and there are horse prints at the gate and we haven't owned a horse in 10 years. Most cows get stolen around here with a good horse, a strong rope, a electric winch in the front of a stock trailer and a bag of range cubes. Its a lot quicker than stealing the trailer and corral panels like the old time rustlers used to do it.
Btw, good cattle theifs always have really nice cow heards, because the cows that come running to range cubes are usually heathy, fat, and not crazy.
