Nebraska, The land of corn and cattle
Ya we have about 10 pounds of 7018AC rod as our welder is AC only. It does start much better than DC but for a begining welder i still think 7018 is a little difficult to learn on. After he gets some practice under his belt and can start laying good beads then have at it with the 7018.

Buster ill give you a couple more tips on getting started welding. The way i learned about how to weld and getting penetration was my dad gave me some 3/16X 2 or 2.5 flat steel cut into pieces about 4 inches long he then showed me what to do on a couple pieces, gave me some tips, then handed me about a pound of rod and told me to have at it. To see how good your penetration is make a butt weld then stick in the vise and beat it with a hammer until it folds over and breaks. If your getting enough penetration is should break right at the edge of your bead not the original seam. and the last tip i give to begining welders is when youre practicing with your scrap or whatever instead of making beads left to right or right to left try making them from up to down toward you, it lets you better control how wide your bead is and i think it lets you see better until you get everything committed to muscle memory.

Also 6013 is a great rod to practice with and to some minor repairs. Its very forgiving to the beginner.
