WC MN | It's physiological maturity of the individual kernal on a cob of corn. If you remove the kernal, and check the bottom, there is a dark brown/black area where it "connects" to the cob when it's mature. This signifies the end of "grain fill". Up North here, we have to be careful on planting dates in relation to corn maturity dates. Corn that's not black layered plus an early frost usually equals very light test weight and poor dry down. 2009 was an excellent example here. Guys where combining 32% moisture corn in November with high 40's test. Standability was good so guys that left till spring ended up harvesting in the high teens. Dryer gas killed a lot of guys. | |
