Cereal rye is used more here where I see more annual ryegrass in Indiana. Since ryegrass is a turf type grass it is much shorter.
It was taught not to plant corn into a grass so that is the old cereal rye theory. Some are successfully doing today by managing it a little closer I think.
It is easy for me to drill rye into cornstalks going to beans. If my beans are off early enough I can plant wheat or many different cover crops but cereal rye is about my only option in late October.
