Martinsville, Ohio | Farmers are learning to use covers to remove extra moisture at a critical time. The rye roots also are so mellow to plant into with all that nutrient solution and gas exchange in the root hairs right in the seedling zone. If timed properly, it can be a great advantage. I saw more cover around here this year than ever and many planted soybeans into head out rye. A few did the same thing with corn and it all looks pretty good. What I like is the covered soil and less weed competition. I do have to watch for insects more but the advantages look better than the disadvantages. I will be planting more rye after corn this fall and radish combo's after soybeans.
