why does my corn look so much better where I had rye cover crop?

A couple of observations (from my area). The corn plants will grow taller & faster in cover that itself is taller, in competition for the sunlight. The shorter the cover crop , the less the need to compete for sunlight. The faster & greater the growth, the more energy the small corn plant is able to produce compared to its' shorter brother w/o the cover crop. That being said, in our area, the cover reduces event the slightest bit of blowing soil, sand, etc.... The plants are much better protected even from the effects of static electricity from a blowing wind. This reduction in early plant stress, I believe contributes to higher yields (all other things being equal).
