Subject: Re: Dairy cow- injured teat

nw NC
The cow is a fine-looking three year-old milking 80-90 lbs. Found it pinched Monday A.M. Sanitized it with many dippings and wiping with towels. Inserted a individually wrapped sterile plastic infusion cannula and drained . Same thing Mon. P.M. except nothing would drain. Did nothing Tues. A.M. Tues. P.M. cow was last to come in . Quarter was full and tight with some edema swelling. Cow was chewing cud but did not eat grain in parlor. Managed to get some fluid drained and it reacted CMT test. Talked with a vet Tues. night he advised against amputation. Wed. morning she came in early and ate. Other quarters were not as full and swollen quarter was softer. Got it drained but had to work at it as some soft lumps were draining and stopping free flow. Loaded her up with Oxy-tet IV. I ordered some teat dilators. Hoping for the best. How do you kill a quarter? I'd rather do that and milk her three- quartered if I can't get the quarter dried off.
