Subject: Re: Dairy cow- injured teat

Faunsdale, AL
Don't amputate unless there's toxic stuff in there as indicated by sick cow and lumps in the liquid that can be felt in the teat. At that point, it's probably the last chance to help her live through it. Once you amputate one, you cannot treat the quarter or even kill it with iodine, so it's the last option. Unfortunately if it's bad in there, lots of times, nothing much drains out, and the cow stays sick. Also consider that she's smearing a pure culture of mastitis germs all over every stall she lays down in for the rest of her life.

Probably the best option is to leave it alone if you really want the cow(and be prepared for the almost inevitable bad things that may follow from not milking it) or if she's just a cow, ship her as quickly as possible.
