Kingston,Mi
Years ago on an episode of Michigan Outdoors, a video or movie (might have been before video) of a guy ice fishing on ice so thin that he placed some plywood on it to distribute weight, this appeared to be a lake with still water. Ice MAY have been all of 1/2 inch. I believe that the verdict from the DNR officer who was a guest commentator was" that's illegal" needed to be thicker to be legal to ice fish.

Shortly we will be seeing pictures of ice fishing on the Saginaw River with the thin ice warnings from the Coast Guard. I think that the veteran river ice fishers know where the currents are and the thin ice, but a lot of down staters come to fish contests and do not have that knowledge.
