Hi Marc, I bought the MT in the spring of '03.
What looks like a base is nothing more than a rubber pad glued to the inside of the windshield. It may have somethig to do with noise control as the exhaust pipe gets closer to that corner of the cab than any other. I'm not sure if the cabs on the 800s are larger than the 700s??
