Crawford County, Robinson, Illinois | Haven't done that for some years, but helped Dad drive a sand point on his bottom land farm back in the 1950's. Key was to use bar soap to seal the openings on the sand point before starting, kept dirt from plugging the holes until we reached sand. We actually drove the point in the basement of the house, using five foot sections of galvanized (did not have plastic then) with a cap on top, a sledge hammer driving it down. In that river bottoms, a 15' well would pump all day in a drought without running out of water. We later used a 400IH with three point to drive 10 foot joints of galvanized. Hooked a chain on the three point, lowered the hitch (locked it first so it didn't float) and it pushed it into the ground. When we first moved on the farm, there were several pitcher pumps in different locations of the farm, used to water the horses in the field back years ago. Was always nice, didn't have to carry a water jug, cold water was always available at each pitcher pump. |
