Yes they work, but as mentioned, the courser sands work best. Only problem, is where that courser sand is, how thick that layer is. (how deep) We have had many of them, and driving them is mostly guess work, only going by what other wells are like as far as depth etc.
The best we have had, is one that was done by making a cutter out of a skil saw blade welded to a pipe coupling. Attached to that was the 1 1/4" pipe and working it around and an up an down motion while pumping water through it. Going down through the soil profile, you can get an idea what the material is like being flushed out of the hole. When you get to that course sand/gravel you are deep enough. THEN, use a plastic point with PVC pipe lowered into the hole. Reason for the plastic is it will not rust. On those steel pipes and points, rust will eventually grow on the point to the time you cannot get water through it. Plastic will not grow rust.
On those steel points, say the good course layer is 2' thick. Most of the shallow well points are 3'-4' in length. When you drive the point down, it is impossible to know how much of the point is in that good layer. You may have a few inches in it, or you may drive past that layer. Difficult to pass the water up since it will flow down to the point, but it can be slow to get there, making for a low producing well.
