Sunnyvale, CA | the WAAS long term (over 30 minutes) accuracy is dependent upon the ionosphere activity. If the sun is quiet, with a low sunspot count (see www.spaceweather.com ) as it is now near the solar sunspot minimum, WAAS does very well because the ionosphere is very settled. Next week?, next year?, in three years?, WAAS may (will!?) not look as good as it does now, because sunspots and their solar flares with coronal mass ejections will result in increased ionosphere activity, and WAAS performance will be different. How good WAAS will look will depend upon the sunspots and their effect on the ionosphere.
Some growers have tried WAAS through the last sunspot peak around 4 to 6 years ago, and may believe that WAAS is not capable of good repeatable performance all the time, and may have moved on to Omnistar XP/HP or RTK to get repeatable results. Some of those that have tried WAAS this season with the EZ-Guide 500 have had very good performance, much better than they would have had during times of high sunspot activity, and much better than almost anyone would have predicted. Most experienced dealeres will warn those new GPS users that good times (like we are having with WAAS this planting season) will not continue. | |
