Nevada, Iowa | I haven't monkeyed with it for several years now so I am really out of the loop. The best money to tie into here was in horses but they all want "pure" alfalfa, they want it cheap and you'll play all hell collecting from a few. That takes the gravy off of the top very fast.
I have a few acres that are suited for nothing better than hay and I have finally set that up with a local cow / calf producer. He doesn't want to pay any premium but it's no problem collecting and it's better than watching the ground wash away.
I am at a point where I would like to finish a few calves for the locker market and I can utilize the hay better myself. Most of my patches have thinned themselves out to grasses now and I have been experimenting a little with reeds canary grass. If it is harvested right, it seems to be very good feed. It handles different soil types well and it handles wet conditions very well. Just rambling. | |
