Amherst WI | I have a farm that is 25 miles away from my home farm. I have most of it in row crops but I have 22 acres of hay on it that was planted in 2009. It is a great stand of hay. Last summer I sold the standing seeding/oatlage off of it and lost money and didn't get paid for most of it yet on top of it. This year I sold 1st and 2nd crop standing to some neighbors near it. They paid me, but it was still under the cost to produce it. 3rd crop I was going to try to put up myself this week, which due to the distance is a huge PIA but looks to be the best way to hopefull break even on it for the year. I'm ready to kill it off, even though it is a awsome stand. For some reason hay always looks better on a projection sheet than in reality, there always seems to be that one guy selling hay for $1 a bale or $30 an acre for 2 ton/ac standing to screw it up for every one else.
I'm pretty sure I know what the right answer is but I just feel sick killing a good crop off. | |
