Colby, Kansas | Mutt:
I tried canola for 3 or 4 years up on the state line (Decatur County). Our biggest challenges were getting a stand established (small seed size, shallow planting, dry conditions, and no-till don't go the best together), and then if we got a stand getting it to survive the winter. The last year we tried it we had a fair stand, but it was slow to bolt, fill in and mature (attached pics). Weeds got the best of it and we ended up abondoning it.
K-State's canola breeder had told be they were making progress with winter hardiness, but I had given up and really havent kept up with their newer stuff.
