To piggy back off of this; for someone who doesn't already have a row head sensor/ feeler, what does it cost (roughly) to get JD or Headsight sensors setup on the corn head to be able plug the rest of the Ag Leader system in to? Is one better than the other, JD or Headsight, and is one more cost effective, or more universal fit than others (i.e. could you put a JD sensor on a CIH header)?
Here was my situation which may or may not answer some of your questions:
I have an Ag Leader InCommand 1200 and Ag Leader GPS 7500 unlocked and subscribed to Terra Star Pro C. It is used in the planter tractor and planter. SteerCommand Z2 is used to steer the planter tractor.
The InCommand 1200 and GPS get moved to my Deere 9770 for yield monitoring. Three years ago I purchased Ag Leader's Steady Steer assisted steering (turns the steering wheel for me) for the combine. I use it to steer the combine in 30" rowed soybeans. The planter is a 24-30. The soybean head is 35' which means the head can harvest 14 rows with some excess grace. This means even if the "guess row" is a bit wide due to hills, the combine can still handle 14 rows. Steady steer is based on either new or previous AB lines.
However, I was not happy using Steady Steer based on AB lines with harvesting corn.
This was two years ago. I purchased a new but carryover Truesight II kit for this combine. I paid $6000 at that time. The kit included the Truesight parts that I needed but remember I already had the InCommand display and Steady Steer motor which would be used with the Truesight II feeler system.
The kit consisted of the feeler assembly that bolts on one of the corn head dividers. A steering angle sensor that mounts on the steering axle (so the system "knows" how the wheels are currently pointed), a Truesight SCM (Steering Control Module-brain box) and the various wiring harnesses and tees to tie into the header height, operator seat switch, etc. The wiring harness is a bit of a maze since it is designed to be used with various combines and other systems.
The Truesight system has several safety features that prevent assisted steering under certain conditions such as road speeds etc. The InCommand display is used in VT mode to access certain setup menus and to return the steering system to active after road travel. An optional remote "box" is available but using the InCommand is fine since the these interactions are infrequent.
As mentioned above, I have both the complete Steady Steer and Truesight systems in my combine during harvest. I use one or the other but never both at the same time. For soybeans harvest, the Steady Steer motor is connected to the Ag Leader control box and wiring. For corn harvest, I disconnect the motor wiring harness from the Steady Steer wiring harness and plug in the counter part from the Truesight system. I also move my engage/disengage button from one harness to the other.
The Truesight system works very well. The new Ag Leader system appears to be cheaper but does require a GO display. I have no experience with the Deere feeler system or the new Ag Leader feeler option.
Since I am very Pro Ag Leader, if I were buying a feeler system today, I would certainly explore the Ag Leader system with the GO display. Since I am happy with my current two steering systems approach and my InCommand 1200, I don't plan on changing.
