I have seen this happen many times with customer's projects and my own. The intention starts outs just changing one thing but quickly leads to the "one thing leads to another" game. By then I'm into it so far that I need to continue.
Just recently this was my situation when I purchased a Chinese flow meter for checking spray batches. The flow meter was priced right but used a British thread although it was listed as NPT. This meant I needed to purchase quick couplers with the British thread to use the flow meter with my plumbing. I now have more money in the couplers than in the flow meter itself.
