Op said he was planning on him taking over the farm. There is no obligation probably. But if he wants to retain him and incenticize him to operate the farm in the most efficient way, this would be a way to do it.
If so, there needs be a legal buy/sell agreement in place, binding on the op to perform, a right,not an obligation on employees part.
