I have found dead beef calves that look fine and wondered why they didn't live. I have also saved a few calves that when they were born the mother didn't get up right away and get the sack off the head, so I went over and pulled it off the head. It might be possible that mother got up slow and didn't clean the head off quick enough and they suffocated.
