Subject: RE: Organically terminating alfalfa

We grow very little alfalfa but terminate strong stands of medium red clover (often mixed with a grass and another clover) every year.

We primarily use a Howard rotavator as the first pass, followed by either a faster pass with our rotavator or a disk/vertical till tool and then a field cultivator to fit the field for planting corn.

Years ago we tried a pass with a disk-ripper in the fall followed by rotavating in the spring. The disk-ripper didn't kill much of the clover but made the first pass with a rotavator in the spring considerably easier.

This spring, I am considering a shallow pass with a chisel plow before rotavating some of our clover.
